VMware vSAN is a software-defined storage (SDS) integrated into the ESXi hypervisor. It combines the servers’ local disks into a shared pool, providing fault tolerance and flexibility. Virtual machines can move freely between nodes without downtime, and data is replicated between servers. This solution replaces traditional DSS and simplifies storage infrastructure.


No. vSAN is a software solution that uses the servers’ local disks. All storage functions, including replication and caching, operate at the hypervisor level. It doesn’t require a separate DSS and isn’t tied to specific hardware or a cloud, although compatibility with the hardware platform must match the HCL list from VMware.


Without vSAN, virtual machines are “tied” to specific servers: when a node crashes, the data is lost. vSAN combines all the local disks of the cluster into a common fault-tolerant storage, automatically duplicates data and distributes the load. This makes it possible to quickly restore VMs and use the benefits of a single storage pool.


No. vSAN can operate entirely on-premises, without a connection to VMware Cloud. It is integrated into the vSphere infrastructure and is suitable for data centers, branch offices, and private clouds. Using VMware Cloud becomes relevant only when building hybrid solutions, performing backup, or disaster recovery to public clouds.


In the beginning, traditional DSS may cost less but can be more expensive to operate: separate hardware, licensing, and maintenance. vSAN requires a VMware license, but it simplifies infrastructure, reduces maintenance costs, and scales easily by adding servers. In the long term, vSAN is often more cost-saving, especially as the virtual environment grows.
